A MAN was rescued after sinking waist-deep into a peat bog in Saddleworth on Thursday.

Police and Oldham Mountain Rescue team were scrambled to a bog at the top of Chew Track above Dovestones to reports that a man had become stuck after stepping into the bog while out walking with a companion.

The 56-year-old man from Stalybridge was found be submerged to just below his waist and had been stuck for around 60 minutes.

OMRT began the process of digging out the male, filling the void with heather as they progressed.

He was taken to the bottom of Chew Track where paramedics were waiting to meet him.

"We had a positive outcome here but this could have been so very different.

"Luckily the stranded males friend had a mobile phone with him and was able to summon assistance."

They also included safety tips for anyone venturing out on the moors around Saddleworth.

It included taking a mobile phone, letting someone know the rough route and dress accordingly for the conditions.

Walkers are also urged to stick to the pathways and recognisable routes so that peat bogs and the more dangerous areas of ground can be navigated around.
