A KITCHEN fire started in Limeside after a washing machine set ablaze.

There was significant smoke damage at the house in Second Avenue due to the fire last night (February 14).

It is understood the incident was started by an electrical fault with the Hotpoint machine.

The occupants escaped the property and called 999.

Mark Outhwaite, crew manager at Hollins fire station, said: "You could see the flames from the kitchen.

"There was quite a lot of smoke coming off but the crew went in quickly and extinguished the flames.

"The occupiers had left a door open so there was quite a lot of smoke damage.

"We used a positive pressure ventilation fan to limit the damage as best we could."

Fire crews from Hollins and Oldham were called to the incident at 9.50pm.

The incident was recorded as an electrical fault but there was such significant damage to the machine that the crews were unable to determine what had happened.
