A RIVERSIDE walkway in Shaw has been brought back into use after £3,000 worth of improvements were carried out.

Families have been invited to a celebration event tomorrow (February 16) to see the upgrades along Beal Riverside walk.

Young people from Groundwork in Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale (BBOR) were able to secure £3,000 funding to re-level the footpath, replace railings and fencing, and put stone down.

Gemma Harris, education and communities coordinator at Groundwork, said: "The footpath had become very muddy. People using the boardwalk were getting covered in dirt.

"Our Groundwork land team have been carrying out improvements since Tuesday. It has made a huge difference.

"We are holding an event to raise awareness and give people the opportunity to see what has changed."

Mrs Harris added: "Our young people were instrumental in putting together a funding application and helping to organise the celebration event."

Josh Howe, aged 17, and Dale Rees, aged 19, secured the £3,000 grant from the Kerrching Youth Opportunity Fund - a pot of money from Oldham Council and the Stoller Charitable Trust that is available for 11 to 19-year-olds.

Residents are invited to the free event at St George's Playing Field tomorrow to mark the work that has been done.

Tesco's Bag's of Help scheme has also funded part of the project, including the nature-themed activities at the celebration event, including creating bird feeders, wild flower seeding, and a scavenger hunt.

The event takes place between 11am and 1pm.
