AN INVESTIGATION is ongoing after 'chaos and disorder' broke out at Blackpool Comes To Oldham family funfair.

Police were called to reports of a large-scale disorder at the fair on Thursday night.

A 20 men, aged between 17 and 20, were involved in a confrontation with security staff after a dispute began over accessing the fairground rides.

Further chaos ensued after one of the members of the group was asked to leave the site, according to police.

The group was ordered to disperse from Hardman Lane, Failsworth, and the number of officers in the area was stepped up.

Officers from Oldham Central policing team said they are working with the fair's events team as part of efforts to prevent any future incidents.

A statement on the official Blackpool Comes To Official Facebook page apologised for 'rowdy youths' at the fair, in Hollinwood Avenue.

They said: "We would like to apologise to anyone whose enjoyment was disturbed by some rowdy youths at tonight’s hugely popular Bring a Friend promotion.

"There were no reported injuries and no first aid was required.

"However, we would like to reassure everyone security will be stepped up, to prevent access to anyone trying to disrupt people’s fun."

Another post has been released today to reassure residents that the fair will be open today as planned.

The follow-up statement read: "We will not allow an undesirable minority to spoil the fun for everyone else."

Security at the Blackpool Comes To Oldham event is due to be increased.

Oldham Central policing team for Greater Manchester Police said: "Just before 7.45pm on Thursday (February 15), police received a report of a large-scale disorder at the fair.

"On attendance officers were advised that a group of around 15 to 20 men aged between 17 and 20 had been involved in a confrontation with security staff following a dispute about accessing rides.

"Disorder then broke out.

"Despite speculation on social media, armed police did not attend and tear gas was not used."

Although a knife was reported as being seen during the incident, police said no one who was at the scene, or who has been spoken to since, has confirmed this to be the case.

A dispersal order was given and additional patrols will be present in the Failsworth area tonight and throughout the weekend.

Police are also liaising with event organisers in efforts to prevent any future incidents.

No arrests have been made at this time.
