A FIRE started in Delph after a hearth went up in flames on the ground floor of a cottage.

The chimney surround at the property in Grains Road caught fire, causing damage to the floor.

Fire crews from Oldham Central, Chadderton and Hollins were called to the incident and used buckets of water to put out the flames.

Oldham Central Watch manager Phil Courtnell said: "The crews used buckets of water to keep the damage down.

"The hearth was cut away. They got rid of all the burnt material."

Crews were called to the cottage at 6.40pm las night (Thursday, February 15).

The team issued a warning to residents looking to install an open fire or log burning stove where the chimney breast has previously been boarded up.

They urged residents to have a survey carried out on the chimney to ensure it is clear and to check there are no cracks in the chimney or flue.
