AN investigation has been launched after a car worth around £10,000 was destroyed in a suspected arson attack.

Firefighters were called to Victoria Street, in Chadderton, at about 2.30am yesterday morning to reports a VW Polo was ablaze.

The owner of the 66-plate car believes the car was torched by someone with a personal grudge against him.

He has handed CCTV footage to the police, who will now investigate the matter.

Watch manager Andy Gilfoyle said: “He believes it was started by someone pouring petrol in the engine compartment and setting fire to it.

“There was no danger to people or property. The car was parked on the road but some distance from the house. It was fairly straight forward to put out, but the vehicle was destroyed, there was nothing salvageable.

“The owner was a young guy and was annoyed because he believes it’s one of a few incidents by the same person.”

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
