OLDHAM Rotary Club has commended the town’s top students a ceremony in the civic centre council chamber.

It is the first year that the winner and runner up students have been from the same school, since the awards were launched 18 years ago to commemorate the millennium.

The awards seek to recognise students who are making or who have made an outstanding contribution to their school, community or family while maintaining high standards in their personal lives.

The winners were: 16+, Thomas Tupman, Oldham Sixth Form College; 11-16, Mubashirah Hanif, Hathershaw College.

The runners up were: 16+, Iqra Ijaz, Oldham Sixth Form College; 11-16, Luke Charnock, Coop Failsworth Academy.

The Mayor of Oldham praised the student acheivements, “They are Oldham’s future, I believe that all of them can become whatever they want, even Oldham’s first citizen like me.”
