A SPECIALLY trained squad of security marshals is to be drafted in to deal with problems at one Oldham’s most popular beauty spots.

The dramatic move comes after a three-hour meeting with police and representatives from RSPB, United Utilities, Peak District National Park and Oldham Council discussing mounting concerns over Dovestone at Greenfield.

Last weekend police officers carried out a charm offensive strategy targeting visiting motorists and distributing information leaflets.

“More than 600 cars entered the site each day on Saturday and Sunday and although many were frustrated at the lack of parking spaces they quickly left with a smile and wave, understanding the infrastructure could only handle so many vehicles,” said a police officer.

“No barbecues were taken into the site over the two days during the deployment phase and those that were discovered at the meet and greet point were dealt with by friendly advice about Peak Park rules.”

“Overall, it was a very positive two days on site with no issues reported.”

And in a few weeks a new park ranger will take up duties at Dovestone supported by the Dovestone marshals who will manage the site in times of peak demand backed by a policing team.

The new moves were welcomed by frustrated residents who had been marooned in their cottage homes by the deluge of visitor traffic.

At one point householders at Forty Row, barricaded their car park to stop the visitor invasion and after heated exchanges.

Last month, the moors surrounding the reservoir were ravaged by a spate of arson attacks.
