MORE warnings have been issued to residents and visitors to the Saddleworth area following yet another grass fire.
Firefighters from Oldham were called to Old Kiln Lane at Grotton last night (Wednesday, May 23) and were battling the blaze well into the early hours of Thursday morning.
A fire service spokesman said the appeared to have been started deliberately. But he also sent out a warning to smokers and visitors to be vigilant on the tinder dry moorland.
“When we are dealing with grass fires, it means our resources are depleted across Greater Manchester,” he said. “The grass and shrubbery up there is very dry and with the strong winds it burns like tinder.”
The warning follows a spate of fires near to Dovestone Reservoir which have prompted a team of specially trained security marshals to be brought in to raise awareness of the dangers of wild fires.
