JAZZ enthusiasts in Oldham have been boosting audiences at regular Sunday gigs in the neighbouring town of Rochdale.

Organisers of “Jazz on a Sunday” concerts which take place at the Newtown National Club in Nixon Street, off Manchester Road in Castleton say its events have been boosted by a strong presence of visitors from Royton, Chadderton and Shaw.

The not-for-profit traditional jazz club has been running for 40 years, and its current organising committee chaired by Tony Sheldon is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Mr Sheldon told The Oldham Times: “I know we are outside Oldham, but we really value the support we get from the town.

“We’re always trying to increase support for jazz and it is a challenge to pay for top class musicians from all over the country and in some cases from abroad.”

Jazz on a Sunday event take place every two weeks. The next gig is the Aire Valley Jazz Band, which visits on July 22, starting at 8pm, with an admission price of £8.

The band was formed as a tribute to Peter Franks who died last year after leading the band for many years.

Following that, the Savannah Jazz Band feature on August 5, followed by Andrew Mackenzie’s Jazz Friends on August 19.
