ONE of Saddleworth’s most iconic pubs is marking its very own special hail and farewell.

After five successful years, popular landlords Dave Devine and Craig Wilkes have called time at The Cross Keys Inn, Uppermill, owned by brewery J W Lees.

During their tenure, they have claimed a string of brewery accolades and received a special award for maintaining the pub in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide more than 40 consecutive years.

Now Darren and Denise Lignum, both aged 52, have moved into the landmark hostelry with the promise to build on the pub’s famed traditions.

Denise, mother of three, who has been employed in the brewery’s customer care department for more than four years, is from a family with strong links to the brewers.

Her family ran the The Boarshaw Hotel, Middleton, for 24 years and her uncle, Mick Boardman, was innkeeper of The Junction, next to J W Lees brewery.

Husband Darren, a former site manager at Crompton Primary School, said: “We are very excited to be taking over the Cross Keys.

“There is a big return by customers to traditional pubs with good wholesome food - we intend to ensure that continues to grow and we are really looking forward to meeting all the regulars and making new friends .”

Outgoing couple Dave and Craig said: “After an amazing five years we decided, after careful consideration, to take a rest from the pub industry.

“During the last five years we have seen the pub change and grow, especially with the extension to the patio and the full refurbishment.

“Over that time we have also come to know the local community and have met wonderful people along the way.

“We would like to say thank you everyone who has supported us throughout the years and an amazing team around us.

“Thank you for everything you have done for us, we couldn’t have done it without you. But we won’t be losing touch with the community.”

The pub is a favourite watering hole for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and its chairman, Mick Nield, said: “We send Dave and Craig every good wish for the future.”
