WITH a week to go until Halloween, The Oldham Times has been looking for some of the borough's spookiest sites.

Thanks to the Paranormal Database, a website run by Darren Mann, it has found them.

Darren takes stories of the supernatural from across the centuries and shares them with the people of the UK.

If the website is to be believed, a lot of these stories come from our borough – and in particular from its pubs.

Here are some highlights:

Grasscroft – Farrars Arms

The women's bathroom of this pub in Saddleworth is said to be haunted.

And if that is not frightening enough, the ghost of a woman who died in the building also wanders its corridors.

Middleton – Radclyffe Arms

The shadow of a man who took his own life in the cellar has been seen in this pub over the border in Middleton.

He sits alone at the bar, nursing a glass of beer.

Oldham – The Star Inn

The Star Inn is no longer open on King Street, but when it was in the 1990s it was visited by a spooky spectre.

One night, after the alarm went off, the landlord checked the CCTV to see a man in a short-sleeved shirt, trousers and a hat drifting around the building.

Scouthead – Old Original

A girl found in a nearby well has been seen at this pub in Saddleworth.

No one knows for certain, but some think she might have been pushed.

Oldham – Birchen Bower

Aside from Oldham's pubs, the site of Birchen Bower – a former manor house in Hollinwood – is also haunted.

The ghost of Hannah Beswick, also known as the Manchester Mummy, roams the area where she once lived wearing a black silk dress and a frilly cap.
