Firefighters across Oldham, Salford and Lancashire battled a lorry fire for hours on the M60 yesterday.

At approximately 2pm on Friday (May 26), there were reports a vehicle had caught fire between Oldham and Bury on the M60.

The motorway was closed between junction 21 (Chadderton) and junction 19 (Heaton Park) as emergency services attended to the major incident.

While traffic was brought to a standstill, five fire engines from Heywood, Chadderton, Salford central and Broughton battled the blaze for more than three hours.

The motorway only reopened again at around 4.20pm.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Crews arrived quickly at the scene and worked to make the area safe.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used two hose reels, a lance, a thermal imaging camera and a short extension ladder to extinguish the fire."

Firefighters were still on the scene as of 5pm and had been tackling the lorry fire for three and a half hours, the spokesperson confirmed.
