A coffee shop and cafe in Royton has issued a public notice to squash rumours.

Bru'd Awakenin's cafe, situated in The Old Mill on Shepherd Street, said it received a "concerning phone call" on Wednesday (June 21) about the premises being closed down.

The dog-friendly cafe and bar is currently in the midst of a crowd-funded expansion, which it said is "the only change on the horizon".

In a series of posts on social media, the cafe said there is a "false rumour circulating the town" as it announced: "We are here to stay."

"We have been informed by a customer that incorrect information, advising that we have closed down, is passing along the grapevine.

"This is completely untrue.

"So please, if anyone hears this rubbish, correct folk and inform them we're alive and kicking.

"Times are hard without this", it added.

The rumour comes as the cafe launched a crowdfunding campaign earlier this year with hopes to expand the building - and weather the storm of the cost-of-living crisis.

In March, Bru'd Awakenin's owner, Shelby Bunn, said the cafe was on the brink of closure with profits being "eaten up" by skyrocketing bills, supplier costs and ingredients.

Meanwhile, they were forced to turn away at least 10 people a day due to a lack of space.

To survive, she said they needed to get "more bums on seats", by expanding the floorplan into the neighbouring unit.

As of May 15 this year, the business successfully managed to raise £4,777 with the help of residents and supporters.

In another post on social media, the team thanked everyone who pledged, shared, spread the word "and guided us through this crazy time".

"We have been completely humbled by the way our community has riled together to give us the 'lift off' that seemed impossible just a few short months ago.

"It’s almost impossible to put into words how grateful and appreciated everyone’s support has been when times are so difficult for everyone", the post added.

The team said the plans were then put in motion and that the expansion was finally happening.

"We know this is a marathon, not a sprint, so we will chip away bit by bit, starting with knocking the dreaded wall down, getting a chunk of the extra seating in so we can increase turnover and then renovating further as we go along.

"Thank you, gracias, merci, danke and a million hugs from our little shop on Shepherd Street, we love and appreciate you all."
