A woman has been stretchered off a hill in Saddleworth after being rescued.

The woman slipped while walking in Birchen Clough and suffered a suspected broken arm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) were called out to the area after receiving an alert from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).

The team found the woman below the waterfall in Greenfield Brook.

After receiving pain relief, the woman was put onto a stretcher and carried down the boulder section to the weir before then being driven to a waiting ambulance.

The rescue comes just over a week after the OMRT issued a stark warning on the dangers of hiking the nearby ‘Trinnacle Trail’ with its “challenging terrain”.

The team says the number of people attempting the trail has “surged” due to its popularity on social media, with 25 per cent of call outs in the area now from people following the trail and some involving “serious and/or potentially life-changing injuries”.

The woman involved in Wednesday’s rescue was however prepared and knew what to do in an emergency.

Following the rescue, a spokesperson from OMRT said: “We often give advice that people venturing out into the hill should be prepared by checking the route and the weather, carrying correct equipment and map and compass, all of which this party had done.

“They also knew exactly what to do when an emergency happened - call 999, ask for police, then Mountain Rescue - which helped to ensure our response could be as quick and efficient as possible. It just goes to show that sometimes accidents can happen even to the most well-prepared people.

“We wish the casualty all the best for a speedy recovery.”

A team of 16 OMRT personnel were involved in the rescue for three hours 30 minutes.
