A new cafe which is serving up breakfast, sandwiches and protein bowls for less than £10 has opened this week.

New bosses have taken the reigns of a former well-loved cafe on Chapel Street and Hollins Road and have given the premises a makeover.

Rjk's Kitchen, which has replaced Zena Bees Cafe, officially opened on Monday (April 1) with a hefty menu, ranging from paninis, sandwiches, salad boxes, pasta salads and jacket potatoes to English breakfasts, 'healthy' breakfasts and protein boxes.

The new owners come as Zena Bees Cafe became available to buy for just shy of £18,000 after just three years in business.

The community cafe was held in high regard by customers who said it served up "amazing food" and "never disappoints".

A sneak peek in Rjk's Kitchen shows the new cafe is promising to follow in the footsteps of the cafe's legacy with a wide variety of homecooked food available for as little as £2 and no more than a tenner.

Cold sandwiches, from egg mayo to ham, chicken, beef, tuna or chicken tikka start from as little as £2.20, or can be eaten hot in a panini from £3.

Omelettes, BLTs, spam butty's and even jam on toast are also on offer.

Meanwhile, the cafe's freshly-made salad boxes come with meat or halloumi, salad, coleslaw and a boiled egg for £6.50 and its pasta salad boxes cost £7.

There are also wraps, such as a burrito wrap and steak wrap, from £3.50, as well as English breakfasts under the £6 mark.

While plain chips are priced at £2.80, diners can also opt for a range of toppings such as beans, cajun spice and salt and pepper for up to £3.90.

Rjks Kitchen is also serving up a 'mega' breakfast, composed of double eggs, black puddings, hash browns and toast, plus three sausages, three pieces of bacon and spam as well as mushrooms, beans and tomatoes for £8.

Diners can opt to 'make it healthy' for £7.40 too, swapping the usual order for chicken sausages, turkey bacon and poached eggs.

In the spirit of healthy eating, Rjks Kitchen is also creating protein boxes for £8.

Customers can build their own protein box with a main meat item, such as steak or chicken, to add to rice, noodles or pasta with salad.

Diners can then add other fresh green foods, such as broccoli, kale and avocado, and top the box with a seasoning like jerk or peri as well as a sauce such as mint yoghurt or hot chill.

If that's not enough, customers can eat in or takeaway - and pick up a Sunday roast every Sunday between 4pm and 6pm.

The cafe is currently open every day from 7.30am to 3.30pm but limited on Sunday to 8am until 12pm.
