An Oldham primary school which offers a "family-orientated and nurturing" atmosphere has said it is proud of its pupils following a Ofsted report.

Beal Vale Primary School, part of the Crompton House Church of England Multi Academy Trust, is based on Salts Street in Shaw and teaches nearly 200 students aged between four and 11.

Following a two-day inspection on February 28 and 29, the school has been largely praised for teaching and culture.

Sheila Iwaskow and Katherine Muncaster, the two inspectors, said pupils are "proud to belong to this family-orientated and nurturing school" and are "happy and keen to learn".

Students were described as "polite" and are said to "behave well".

The report says Beal Vale is "ambitious for pupils", including children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), with the curriculum labelled as "well-organised" and "purposeful".

Inspectors also praised the range of activities offered by the school outside of academics, including sewing, first aid and British Sign Language.

When it comes to those working at the school, the inspectors said staff were "friendly" and knew the students and parents well.

They added: “Pupils know that adults will help them if they have any worries or concerns.”

Teachers at Beal Vale were said to be well supported and delivered many areas of the curriculum well.

When it came to things that could be done better at Beal Vale, the report said that in some subjects, the curriculum was new and had not yet been fully implemented, which led to teachers not being as confident as to what children should be taught and when.

The report read: "As a result, pupils do not progress through these curriculums as well as they should."

Another area the inspectors said the school could improve on was assessment strategies in some subjects, which Beal Vale is still said to be refining.

A statement from the school read: “We are very proud of our children and the whole Beal Vale Family that make our school such a special place to be.

"For Ofsted to recognise how proud our pupils are to belong to our ‘family-orientated and nurturing school’ and that everyone is welcome, is of great credit to the hardworking staff, governors and MAT directors. Well done, everyone!”

The Ofsted report also praised the school for the development of reading and language skills, the support for SEND children and teaching of personal safety.

One line in the report read: "[Students] leave school as well-rounded individuals who are well prepared for the next stage of their education."
