A special rescue effort involving mountain volunteers and a coastguard helicopter joined forces to come to the aid of a lost and injured woman in Oldham this week.

Late on Monday (April 29) afternoon, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said it was approached for assistance by Greater Manchester Police to find a lost woman in Dovestones.

The woman had called 999 and was unable to get down from the hillside.

She reported feeling unwell and the rescue team sprung into action to trace her whereabouts.

The team initially couldn't track her location but using 'Phone Find' technology, the volunteers were able to find her below Dean Rocks.

The 21 rescuers deployed to the area, some via Ashway and another group via Fox Stone to try to find her.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team then said volunteers spotted a red jacket amongst a rocky area below the edge path from its control vehicle at the bottom of Ashyway Gap.

Once team members had climbed up to the top, they were guided to the sighting and found the woman they had been looking for.

A remote rescue medical technician assessed the woman and found she had injured her leg and had become cold.

Due to the potential long carry-off, a Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter was called to assist with the evacuation.

The woman was placed onto a stretcher, hauled up the steep rocky ground and loaded into the helicopter to transfer to hospital.

An ambulance from the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust had also been called.

The rescue mission took the crew four hours and 45 minutes to complete.
