RICHIE Wellens is simply concentrating on footballing matters despite reports linking Manchester United legend Paul Scholes to the Latics hotseat.

“We’ll let the people at the club decide what’s going on. I am aware that they’ve interviewed Paul Scholes,” he said.

“We’ve got Blackburn on Saturday, so I’ll take training today and tomorrow, take the team on Saturday and then maybe on Monday evaluate everything again.

“If Paul decides he wants to take his first steps on the ladder then he’s got a decision to make. In terms of Paul Scholes as a name, for me there’s no one better.

“I don’t know what Paul’s situation is with his TV work, but he would be a great figure to have around here, whether to offer technical advice or whatever – he’s probably the best technical player this country has ever produced.”

When pressed on if he fancied Scholes as his number two, Wellens added: “I’m not going to say that, because Paul Scholes is a massive name. It’s about what he decides in terms of if he wants to be a manager, where does he take his first steps?”

Wellens is bidding to become the first Latics manager in history to win his opening four games when Blackburn visit Boundary Park in Saturday’s all-ticket clash.

Supporters are reminded there will be no tickets available on the day and no payment at the turnstiles.
