RICHIE Wellens says he can’t fault his players for their 100 per cent commitment to the cause in what has been a topsy-turvy season.

The Latics boss feels his side are giving everything in the battle against relegation after taking seven points from the last nine following Tuesday’s victory over MK Dons which lifted them out of the drop zone.

He said: “We had a shocking start, then went on a fantastic run, followed by a dodgy period again. If you have two dodgy periods then you need to have two good winning runs.

“The players are giving everything. We are always the dominant team, on the front foot. We need to keep that same spirit and energy until the end of the season if we’re going to survive.”

Latics have no game this weekend after their derby clash at Rochdale had to be rearranged due to Dale’s FA Cup fifth-round tie with Tottenham. It will now take place on Tuesday, April 17. Southend visit Boundary Park on Saturday, February 24.

Wellens added: “I’m really pleased for the players. I thought every single one of them put everything into it on Tuesday.

"The only slight disappointment now is the fact we’ve got no game for a while when we’re on such a high.”
