Avro manager Alex Frost was delighted with the resolve shown by his side as they battled back from a losing position to score three goals in the last 15 minutes and thus seal a 3-1 success at Burscough on Tuesday night, writes Liam Bambridge.

The visitors had surrendered their 100 per cent record in the league the previous week against Congleton, and they suffered another setback on the hour mark at the Community Ground against a home side who had already belied their lowly position in the table with a well-organised and resilient display. Avro keeper Grant Shenton was adjudged to have brought down Mosopeoluwo Awe, and Eddie Servuts calmly converted the spot kick to break the deadlock.

However, Frost was impressed with the response. “I did not feel that we had played especially badly up to that point; they certainly raised their game against us and it was a pretty even first hour overall.

“However, as soon as they went ahead, I was looking to see how my players felt about it, and I liked what I saw - there was no sense of panic or feeling sorry for themselves, just a quiet determination to put things right.

“It’s great when everything is going for you, but you also need to know how to dig yourself out of a hole when the going gets tough. I thought we did that brilliantly.”

Full back Kane Wallwork kickstarted the comeback with a superb left foot strike on 75 minutes after a corner had only been half cleared, and substitute Lee Knight made it 2-1 moments later after a brilliant run from Michael Afuye had unsettled the home defence. Liam Ellis’ cool finish with two minutes remaining proved to be the icing on the cake as the visitors recorded a seventh win in eight games in the NWCFL Premier Division.

After a hectic start to the season, next week heralds the first occasion when there is no midweek fixture with which to contend, and Frost admits that this comes as a welcome relief.

“The lads have worked their socks off over the last six weeks, and they will now get the chance to have a bit of a break.

“It also gives us the opportunity to do some work on the training pitch; we have a massive game next Saturday against Wythenshawe, they are 100 per cent so far in the league so we need to be well rested and properly prepared if we are going to get anything from that one.”

The first team’s involvement in the FA Cup ended with a creditable defeat in west Yorkshire nearly a fortnight ago, but the club’s under 18 side remain involved in their equivalent competition, the FA Youth Cup, after a 3-2 victory against Clitheroe ensured their first ever appearance in the second qualifying round of the competition.
