Avro manager Alex Frost admits that he cannot wait for Saturday to arrive, as his side look to record a victory which would in turn give them the opportunity to scale new heights in the non-league pyramid, writes Liam Bambridge.

A 1-1 draw with champions Vauxhall Motors at the Vestacare Stadium last weekend was enough to keep the Ro in second place going into the final round of fixtures, and the visit of Barnoldswick Town will provide them with the opportunity to book a place in the step 5 play-offs in only their third full season in semi-professional football.

“I thought we deserved to win the game, and when the final whistle went, we were all a bit gutted,” said Frost. “However, when we got in the dressing room and realised that Wythenshawe had only drawn as well, the mood changed pretty quickly.

“We know that it is going to be a really tough game against a team with nothing to lose, but at least it is still in our own hands and that is all anyone wants going into the last ninety minutes of the season.”

An early goal from Conor Harwood initially rocked the home side, but they recovered quickly and Motormen keeper Sam Booth had to make two excellent saves from Louis Potts and Sam Rathbone to keep his side in front. However, he was powerless to prevent Potts from grabbing a deserved equaliser a minute before the interval, the in-form striker powering home a header from an inch-perfect Matty Crothers cross to draw his side level.

The second half was a more even affair with few clear cut goal scoring opportunities, but Avro still had the edge and only another brilliant save from Booth stopped Potts from notching his second of the afternoon.

Attention now turns to the final game of the regular campaign, with all spectators able to gain admission for just a pound thanks to the generosity of the club’s four principal sponsors. “It’s a fantastic gesture,” said Frost.

“We would love to have a big crowd in here for this one - it has been a long and tiring season, and it could make all the difference to the players. These are special times for the club, and this offer gives everyone the opportunity to share them with us.”

Victory on Saturday would set up a ‘winner-takes-all’ play-off match against a step 4 side for Frost’s men on Saturday, April 29, with the opponents yet to be determined. However, he refuses to speculate on their chances of a first ever promotion to the Northern Premier League.

“We are not looking beyond Barnoldswick right now,” he said. “ We must get the job done against them first, and then we will turn our attention to whoever comes next.”
