ROUGHYEDS have snapped up Papua New Guinea international prop McKenzie Yei, on a contract lasting until the end of the 2025 season, writes Kasey Smith.

The 26-year-old arrives at Boundary Park after a stint with Featherstone Rovers, where he became a firm fan favourite.

The Kumuls forward, whose signing was announced last Friday, was a free agent having left Rovers at the start of April.

Yei gained popularity at Post Office Road due to his strong runs and hard hits.

The deal will see him reunite with boss Sean Long who has a long-standing admiration for the forward, having closely followed his career for a number of years.

Long spoke highly of Yei and said: "I brought McKenzie over from Papua New Guinea, he is a really genuine, good bloke and no frills.”

"He’s just a wrecking ball, and a genuinely nice person who fits our DNA as a club.

“We are attracting top-end Championship players here and long may it continue.”

The Papua New Guinea international burst onto the scene at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, where he made three appearances for the Kumuls.

Prior to his arrival to the United Kingdom, the highly-rated Yei played for Queensland Cup side Central Queensland Capras, as well as the PNG Hunters.

He is capable of scoring tries, having bagged five in 20 appearances – 17 of which were off the bench – during his spell with Featherstone.

Yei said he was delighted to sign for Oldham and link up with his former coach.

“I’m really happy to be here, especially to be back with Longy. The boys and coaching staff have been really welcoming,” he said.

"To be honest I thought I would be going home but Longy spoke to me and gave me the opportunity so I am really grateful and really happy.

"I run hard and tackle hard, that is me. I can’t wait to get back on the field and I will give my best with the club who has given me this opportunity.

Fans will have to wait a while to see Yei in action with him currently serving a four-match ban as well as recovering from a knee injury.

He could well make his debut for Roughyeds in the eagerly anticipated top-of-the-table clash against Keighley Cougars which will take place on May 26.
