KEITH Curle is confident that goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler's contract situation will be resolved and he WILL play for Oldham Athletic.

The Canada international was among Curle's first summer signings. But he has yet to make an appearance because his contract was disputed by the EFL under the conditions of the club's transfer embargo, which they were placed under as part of a monitored loan agreement that was made available to League One and League Two clubs earlier this year, based on a three-year business plan to demonstrate financial sustainability over this period.

Latics are now in the process of renegotiating with Leutwiler and the former Blackburn Rovers, Fleetwood and Huddersfield stopper's representatives.

And while there is not a time frame for those talks reaching a conclusion, Curle is confident they will reach an agreement that is favourable for the football club and the club can keep a player he had earmarked as a prime target in his summer recruitment drive.

"You enter into a contract in good faith and the contract gets refuted by the EFL so then you have to renegotiate and re-enter negotiations with players and representatives," said Curle.

"The important thing is all parties are talking."

Asked if he was confident it would be resolved favourably for Latics and Leutwiler would be able to play for the club, Curle said: "Yes, definitely.

"He was identified as a very good goalkeeper, that's why we entered into negotiations.

"Things have got to be right for us, for Jayson, for Jayson's representatives and for the EFL. Things have got to be right."

And although Curle would prefer to have the situation finalised sooner rather than later, Latics' head coach says they are not limited by the transfer window, which ends at 11pm on August 31.

"My understanding is it doesn't affect him because he's an out of contract player," he said.

A statement explaining Leutwiler's absence from the squad was released by Latics earlier this week, after Laurie Walker had to be drafted back in on an emergency seven-day loan following injury to Danny Rogers, who started the season in goal.

The statement read: "Due to an unfortunate misinterpretation of the full terms of the monitored EFL loan Oldham Athletic are having to renegotiate with Jayson.

"Both parties are confident that a solution will be found soon and are keen for him to represent the club on the pitch at the earliest available opportunity.

"In the meantime the club is fully supporting Jayson and remains in training to ensure he is match ready when a resolution is found."
