SHOPKEEPERS in Shaw and Crompton are being urged to be vigilant following reports of young people asking adults to purchase alcohol and cigarettes for them.
Councillor Dave Murphy, who represents Crompton, has written to every off licence in the area urging them refuse the sale of alcohol and cigarettes if they believe it is being purchased for young people.
The Lib Dem councillor, who is also Shadow Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: "I have evidence to support that this practice is going on in the area which is in addition causing young people from out of the town to come in to the Borough attracted by perception of Anti-social behaviour and alcohol related incidents.”
He added that the Police have been made aware of the situation and are working with Oldham Council officers.
Cllr Murphy said: "Shop keepers need to be aware of the situation so they can be extra vigilant and try to avoid inappropriate sales which leads to ASB and misery to residents in that area.
"I would also ask members of the public if approached by a young person to please say no."
