AN elderly couple had to be cut out of their vehicle after their car crashed and ended up on its side.

The man and woman, understood to be in their 80s, were treated on the scene by a paramedic after the incident in Royton.

Fire crews had to cut off the boot of the white Vauxhall Astra Estate to release the couple after the car overturned in Shaw Road at the junction with Blackshaw Lane.

Firefighter Andy Lee, from Chadderton, said: "We released two elderly people from the vehicle at 8.15pm last night (March 5).

"The car had ended up on its side.

"They were treated by us at the scene and then by paramedics."

There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.11pm. An advanced paramedic attended and discharged the patients on scene."
