A PACKAGE seized by a bomb disposal team from a house in Clarksfield last week was "not a viable device", say police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a suspicious item was removed from a property in Hillside Avenue last Thursday.

But following an assessment it turned out not to be an explosive device, as first suspected, and was taken to Waterhead Park where it was disposed of later that day.

The spokesperson said: "It was not a viable device and a controlled explosion was carried out in a nearby park."

The street where it was found was cordoned off as a precautionary measure for several hours and nearby residents were evacuated as police and specialist teams carried out their investigations.
