A FREE event celebrating legendary women’s suffrage campaigner Annie Kenny has been organised for later this month.

Shoulder to Shoulder – A Celebration of Annie Kenney takes place at Oldham Library on Thursday, October 25, from 5.30pm to 7.45pm.

Compered by Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, the evening will consist of a rare showing of an episode from the BBC’s 1974 series Shoulder to Shoulder – an honest and candid dramatization of the story of the suffragettes.

There is also an exclusive look at some of Annie Kenny’s possessions held at Gallery Oldham and a performance by the Oldham Girls’ Choir.

Sculptor Denise Dutton will give talk about the Annie Kenney statue and there will be craft activities with Saddleworth Museum and Gallery.

Places can be booked via www.oldham.gov.uk/suffrage100events

The event falls just outside of Local Democracy Week – a week where the local authority celebrates democracy and civic life.

This is apt given Oldham’s rich suffrage links and the particular achievements of Dame Sarah Lees – Oldham's first female Mayor and only the second female Mayor in the UK – and Marjory Lees who was also engaged in political life.
