AN inquest into the death of an elderly Grotton couple has heard the husband may have mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake on his automatic car before it hit a tree.
The hearing in Ruthin, North Wales was told that there were no mechanical defects on the Ford Focus or medical problems affecting Norman Clarke, aged 81, who died with his 78-year-old wife Doreen, on their way home to Mildred Avenue from their holiday caravan at Betws-yn-Rhos near Abergele. Collision investigator Ian Thompson said there was no other explanation for the tragedy.
The accident happened when the car hit the central barrier and veered across the road before hitting the tree on the A494 at Aston Hill in Flintshire on September 6, 2017. Mr Clarke, a former mechanic and his wife, a retired book-keeper, were both grandparents.
