AN Oldham charity is looking for volunteers to help people living with dementia get the most out of life.

The Oldham Activities Service supports people with dementia to take part in community events, go on visits and continue with their hobbies and interests.

Operated by national health and social care charity Making Space, the service now needs more volunteers so it can support the growing number of people in the borough with a dementia diagnosis.

No experience is required and volunteers will receive all the training they need.

Amanda Barrell, team leader for Making Space, said: “Living with dementia can make it hard to stay active and take part in community life.

"The Activities Service is a vital part of our wider Enhanced Memory Service.

"Working with Oldham Council and the NHS, we support people living with dementia to break down the barriers to living their lives as they always have. We can help people to be fully involved in their local communities, which can help them to live independently for longer.

“But in order to support people living with dementia to make the most of their lives, we need more volunteers."

Janine, who has been a volunteer for two months said: “I have been made very welcome by the team at Making Space.

"I feel valued and have had the training I need to feel confident in what I am doing. I really enjoy interacting with the people we support.”

A volunteer recruitment event is taking place in the foyer of Oldham Library on Wednesday 17 October from 1–3pm.
