OLDHAM Choral Society is set to raise the roof in memory of brave service personnel at its concert on Remembrance Sunday on November 11.

Themed on the armistice centenary commemorations “On Land and Sea”, the event takes place at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, starting at 7pm.

The programme will combine the theme of sadness for those who died or were wounded with that of thankfulness and celebration for the coming peace.

Full of melodic and attractive tunes, this concert will be a rare treat for music lovers.

The first half will be Karl Jenkin's Mass for Peace - "The Armed Man" which is ranked the most popular of all 21st century Choral Works. This is the most frequently played choral work on ClassicFM.

The second half has a nautical theme and offers a rare opportunity to hear "The Songs of the Fleet" by Charles Villiers Stanford. This is a very evocative and moving cycle of five songs composed just before the outbreak of The First World War written by one of Britain's great choral composers.

This will be followed by the famous Henry Wood "Fantasia on British Sea Songs", initially composed to mark the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and now performed annually at the Last Night of the Proms. Audience members will of course be encouraged to join in with these, culminating in "Rule Britannia" and Parry's "Jerusalem" to mark the death of Parry 100 years ago this weekend.

The concert will feature bass baritone Dean Robinson, East Lancs Sinfonia and conductor Nigel P Wilkinson.

Tickets are priced £15, students £5, accompanied children £1, available from ticket secretary on 0161 797 3583 or the RNCM box office on 0161 907 5555
