OLDHAM’S West Indian community is being celebrated in a display at the town’s main library as part of Black History Month.
Oldham Library is hosting the exhibition in conjunction with Oldham Local Studies and Archives.
The industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century and the development of the cotton spinning industry in Oldham during the 19th century resulted in a huge influx of people coming to the borough to satisfy the needs of the mills.
The development of transport links such as roads, canals, railways, ships, and planes enabled people to come from further afield. As a result, new communities were formed and made Oldham the diverse place it is today (Wednesday, October 17), from 10am to noon.
