A MAN has been arrested in connection with a rape in Ashton.

Shortly after 10pm on Tuesday (November 6) 2018 police were called to reports that a teenager had been raped in a wooded area near Cavendish Street.

Yesterday (Wednesday, November 7), officers from GMP’s Ashton CID office arrested an18-year-old man.

He remains in custody for questioning.

The victim, a 17-year-old girl, is continuing to receive support from specially trained officers.

Det Sgt Joe Harrop, of GMP’s Tameside Borough, said: “We have been carrying out numerous lines of enquiry since the initial report was made last night and we now have an 18-year-old in custody arrested on suspicion of rape.

“I want to stress that our investigation remains in the early stages and continue to urge anybody with information to contact police.”
