A WAVE of events across Oldham saw the borough bow its head in silent remembrance to honour the sacrifice of many and to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

On Sunday there were services and processions across Chadderton, Crompton, Failsworth, Lees, Royton, Bardsley, Waterhead and Saddleworth as hundreds of residents, service organisations, members of the armed forces, The Royal British Legion, civic dignitaries and MPs gathered to pay their respects.

In Oldham town centre huge crowds gathered for a procession from New Radcliffe Street to a service at the War Memorial where those laying wreaths included the Mayor, Councillor Javid Iqbal, Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon and armed forces representatives.

In the evening there was a special service at Oldham Parish Church to commemorate the soldiers lost during World War One including a beacon lighting ceremony.

Dobcross Youth Band led the village's procession before playing at the service of remembrance at Holy Trinity Church.

Twelve-year-old principal cornet player Scarlet Brook played a moving rendition of the Last Post and Reveille.

Tens of thousands of men, women and children lost their lives during the First World War, and in subsequent conflicts, either on the battlefield or on the home front and Oldham, in particular, has suffered significant losses.

As part on an ongoing tribute Gallery Oldham is staging the British Muslim Heritage Centre’s award-winning Stories of Sacrifice touring exhibition dedicated to the bravery and sacrifice of Muslim soldiers who fought for Britain in the First World War until December 1.

Peace and Plenty? Oldham and the First World War exhibition runs until January 12 and looks at the experiences of those on the home front in Oldham and revisits their everyday lives, losses and achievements using the gallery’s’ extensive collections.

On Sunday, November 25, at 2pm, there will be the Laying of the Standard 10th Manchester Regiment and the dedication of the new memorial at Oldham Parish Church.
