A THIEF is thought to have tried to blow up a cash machine in an attempt to snatch the contents at the Home Bargains store in Chadderton.

A crew from Chadderton Fire Station were called out to an automatic fire alarm at the premises in Middleton Road, at 3.30am, on November 5, where they found the area around the cash machine had been badly damaged.

White Watch Manager Nick Pine said it appeared to have been caused by "some sort of explosion".

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called by the fire service shortly after 3.30am on Monday, November 5, to a report of an intruder at a shop on Middleton Road, Chadderton.

"Offenders caused damage to the shop while unsuccessfully attempting to remove a cash machine from a wall at the premises.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
