THE filthiest takeaways, restaurants, pubs, cafés and hotels in Bury have been revealed.

Five Bury businesses have been slapped with a zero rating, the lowest possible, by the Food Standards Agency.

The number has risen since November 2017 when just three businesses were handed a zero rating.

Two of the lowest rated businesses are in Bury itself; Tong Feng House, in Manchester Road, and Tony’s Curry Pot, in Haymarket Street.

Meanwhile, Radcliffe is home to three zero-rated eateries, Blue Chutney, Jubilee Chipshop and The Coffee Shop.

In September, Blue Chutney, which is based in Blackburn Street, was issued with an emergency prohibition order, forcing it to shut temporarily, after Bury Council deemed it to pose ‘an imminent risk of injury to health’.

It came after inspectors discovered an ‘extensive’ rat infestation, including droppings and smear marks in the kitchen and food preparation area.

The Indian takeaway has since been revisited and allowed to reopen, however, its zero rating still stands.

When approached by the Bury Times, they declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Jubilee Chipshop, in Ainsworth Road, received its rating following a visit in March of last year.

Inspectors reported concerns about the lack of a documented food safety management system, as well as pest control and proofing, general hygiene, structure, and staff training.

A spokesman for the business said they have since asked for a reinspection, which is yet to take place.

Tong Feng House was rated zero when it was inspected in July. They were found to have stored cooked chicken in cardboard boxes which had previously held raw meat.

When approached for comment, they did not respond.

Tony’s Curry Pot, and The Coffee Shop, which is based in Church Street West in Radcliffe town centre, also declined to comment.

A total of 375 businesses were given a rating of five, 71 were given a rating of four, 52 received a ‘generally satisfactory’ of three, and five received a rating of two, meaning ‘improvement necessary’. 31 businesses received a rating of one.

Each business is given their hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency when it is inspected by a food safety officer from Bury Council.

The scheme is run by local authorities and applies to restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, supermarkets and other food shops. The food safety officer inspecting the business checks how well the business is meeting the law by looking at how hygienically the food is handled, the condition of the structure of the buildings, and how the business makes sure food is safe.

Visits from the authority occur at different times and some businesses may be waiting on forthcoming inspections.

Some may have changed management or closed in the interim.

According to ratings.food.gov.uk, businesses with a rating of zero in Bury as of January 17, 2019 are:

  • Jubilee Chipshop, Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe
  • The Coffee Shop, Church Street West, Radcliffe
