SNOW is expected to continue to blanket Bolton for the remainder of the week and drivers have been warned to stay prepared.

If the conditions get really bad, it is always best to avoid driving if possible, but if you have to get to work or somewhere important there are a number of tips which can ensure you stay safe.

Firstly, if you see Met Office weather warnings for snow and ice it can be useful to prepare for your journey the night before.

Plan journeys around major streets, which are more likely to be cleared and avoid minor roads.

If you have struggled driving in the snow before, consider buying winter tyres to offer better grip, especially if you live on a smaller side street.

In addition, car batteries can be a victim of chilly temperatures which make them run down more quickly. Make sure you do a regular long journey to top it up if you can.

Finally, while it may be appealing to get into a warm car in the morning, police warn not to leave vehicles runnings with the keys in to avoid theft.

Here are 12 things to keep on hand on hand if you have to drive:

  • A blanket, rug or sleeping bag
  • A small or collapsible shovel
  • Extra screen wash
  • Ice scraper
  • De-icer
  • Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars
  • Winter clothing
  • First aid kit
  • Torch
  • Phone charger
  • Jump leads
  • Sunglasses
