VOLUNTARY organisation Oldham Sport Development is looking to recruit school dance groups for its annual schools competition Oldham’s Gotta Dance 2019 taking place on Wednesday, March 27.

Last year the event attracted 23 schools from across the borough and 403 school pupils took part in the heated competition.

The schools who take part will be competing for the coveted title of “Oldham Schools Dance Champions”.

Winners will not only take the Oldham’s Gotta Dance trophy home, but will also be invited back to perform at a prestigious dance showcase event, Dance Splash, in Oldham, later in the year.

The competition is split into three separate categories, KS1, KS2, and KS3/4. Groups will prepare their routines, and can choose any style of dance.

It’s open to most styles of dancing and in the past the competition has seen a wide variety of dance styles, from street dance and contemporary to jazz and maypole.

The popular event is now in its fifth year and has received praise from teachers and parents alike.

Jane Roddy, St Herberts School, said about the competition: “I know St Herberts really enjoyed watching the other schools perform. So thank you to the Oldham Sports Development Team.”

The event will take place on at the Pakistani Community Centre, on Wednesday, March 27, from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

To sign up all schools need to do is email Hannah.Worley@oldham.gov.uk or call 0161 770 4054.

Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Zhaid Chauhan, said: “This competition is so important as it encourages local children and young people to meet, perform and compete with others from different cultures and backgrounds from across the borough – all while having fun.

“Gotta Dance will also raise the profile of dance within schools contributing to the increased activity levels across Greater Manchester – something that needs to improve by 2025.”

“I encourage all schools to sign up to this great competition and put their best foot forward.”
