BOLTON hospital is showing off its latest recruit — a therapy dog named Sydney.

Sydney, a nine-year-old rescue basset hound, is a new addition to the hospital's nursing team.

Sydney can be found doing his rounds on various wards, carrying out his duties as a calming and friendly companion for patients.

Owner and nutrition specialist nurse Sue Ellis took her pup for an assessment before he was welcomed to the wards a few months ago. Sydney takes 20 minute tours, with patients being soothed by stroking and even talking to him.

Ms Ellis said: "It's really lovely because you can feel the atmosphere change. People are excited to see him. He brings a smile to their faces."

She added that seeing Sydney can help patients feel more comfortable, as many people miss their own pets while they are away from home receiving treatment.

On Friday, Sydney took a trip round an elderly patient ward and met Tom Lewis, 89, who declared Sydney a "good boy".

Sydney was met with plenty of treats and pats as he made his way down the corridors, with fellow staff saying they love him as much as the patients do during long days.
