CREWS from five Greater Manchester fire stations spent around two hours putting out a blaze on moorland above Stalybridge last night.

Specialist wild fire units and firefighters from Oldham, Ashton, Stalybridge, Hyde and Bolton North used moorland firefighting equipment to bring the blaze, located above Brushes Road, under control.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service say the fire measured around 100 sq metres and was finally extinguished at around 11.15pm.

They say they were overwhelmed by members of the public calling 999 to report the incident.

In a live blog posted on the GMFRS website they said: "Thanks to the incredible hard work from our firefighters this fire is now out. We will shortly be scaling down our involvement at the scene.

"Our firefighters, from Ashton, Stalybridge, Oldham, Hyde and Bolton North, used specialist moorland firefighting equipment to bring the blaze, which measured 100m squared, under control and extinguish it.

"We were on the scene for approximately two hours. The cause will be looked into in due course."
