BRITISH Transport Police have the painstaking task of re-uniting 101 suspected stolen bikes with their owners after discovering the haul stashed in a house and garden in Oldham.

It took BTP Greater Manchester three trips with two large box vans to remove the bikes which were found at a property in Hathershaw.

A BTP spokeswoman said a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and the handling of stolen goods.

He was later been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Officers came across the huge haul of bikes while investigating the theft of just one bike from a railway station in West Yorkshire.

They are currently working their way through the serial numbers on each bike to determine the owners and registering the details on a national bike database.

The spokeswoman said: "Following an investigation by British Transport Police into a report of a bike theft in West Yorkshire, 101 bicycles were seized from a house in Oldham on February 15 .

"The bikes have all been seized by police and officers are now working to reunite them with their owners.

"Anyone who believes their bike may have been stolen is asked to enter their details on the Bike Register online."
