ADULT learners in Oldham are set to benefit from a free new course which will boost their language skills.

Over the coming year more than 420 residents will be able to take part in the Integrated communities English language programme being run by Lifelong Learning Service in Oldham.

Oldham Council, in partnership with Manchester City Council, has received funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to run more than 30 courses across the borough.

Every learner who signs up will get 30 hours of learning activities in an informal setting out of the classroom.

The service wants to hear from people who are aged over 19 who want to improve their English for a range of reasons, which could be anything from improving their job chances, progressing onto further qualifications through to helping their children with homework.

Residents can also do their bit and get involved.

Volunteer tutors are needed to help run the courses and this would be a good opportunity for adults who are unemployed, underemployed or looking for a change of career as a support worker or tutor.

Training and support will be provided and those who take part can work towards a Level 3 Award in Teaching.

Amina Khatun volunteered as a tutor on a previous Talk English course. She said: “I really enjoyed my experience working with learners in the community.

“I have developed my confidence and skills and gained a qualification in adult teaching. I loved working with the learners and seeing them develop their English in an informal and fun way.

“I have since got a tutor role and I am hoping to continue my development teaching adults.”

Imran Bashir also volunteered as a tutor. He said: “It was great being able to support learners in the community and develop my own skills as I gained a valuable Level 3 qualification.

“It is project that requires some personal commitment, but it is worth it.”

Cllr Shaid Mushtaq, cabinet member for employment and skills, said: “Being able to communicate in English is a must. From buying goods from a shop through to being able to answer questions at a job interview.

“You are never too old to return to learning and by getting the basics right that can lead to more positive outcomes for learners.

“We’d encourage our adults to get in touch and the added bonus is the courses are free.

“By volunteering as a tutor you will get a real sense of achievement. It could also help you if you’re looking for a change of career, personal or professional development or improving your chances of finding employment.”
