FAMILY and friends of a father and son who cheated death in a serious house fire in Royton have launched an appeal for the now homeless duo.

Stevan Chappell, aged 50, and 23-year-old son Courtney were working on a motorcycle in the basement of the Holden Fold Lane terraced home on Saturday afternoon when it burst into flames.

Stevan and Courtney battled their way out but went back in to the blazing home to rescue their confused husky dog Nitro, who they eventually rescued from the garage roof unharmed.

They were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation but Stevan has also suffered burns to his legs and must return for treatment to Wythenshawe Hospital’s burns unit.

Home owner Stevan has no insurance and the damage to the house is estimated to be more than £50,000 prompting an appeal to be launched on the “gofundme” website.

The online appeal has been posted by Courtney’s partner Hollie Normanton and her mother Lisa Normanton.

It says: “The family would like to thank everybody for their concern to help in this horrific event. We do not wish to place any pressure on anybody. Your thoughts and well wishes are greatly appreciated.

“We are trying to help raise to assist in the restoration of the property. Stevan, who found himself without house insurance due to unforeseen circumstances, has now been left distraught and lacking the money to rebuild his home.

“If any trades workers or companies can spare any advice or assistance, please do get in touch.”

It said the entire property needs rewiring and plumbing. Stairs need replacing, walls and ceilings need re-boarding and plastering. All appliances have been lost to the fire and need replacing.

“Any donations would be massively appreciated,” it goes on. “The majority of windows and doors will need replacing.”

It explained how Stevan was working on his motorbike when the engine set alight. “He tried to extinguish the beginnings of the blaze when the bike fell over and spread fuel all over the floor,” it said.

“From here, the flames grew angry and started to spread. Within minutes they were fighting for their lives trying to escape the blaze.

“Although the family have endured a considerable loss they are so grateful to be alive – including the family dog. We would like to thank the firefighters for responding quickly and effectively as they did. If it was not for their response, the outcome could’ve been much worse.

“Thank you to the on scene paramedics and those at the Royal Oldham Hospital for taking care of Stevan and Courtney. They are both overwhelmed by the support and kindness shown by many.”

Crews from four fire engines dealt with the blaze.
