A DRIVER who was travelling "head on" towards other traffic on the wrong side of the motorway has been stopped by police.
The man was seen driving southbound on the northbound section of the M61 around junction 1 for Oldham, Rochdale and Leeds.
He was driving a red VW and travelling in the third lane of the motorway when he was stopped, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Traffic officers posted a picture of the vehicle on social media and said: "The driver of this vehicle was driving southbound on the northbound of the M61 in lane 3 head on to other traffic.
"Luckily we got to him before any collision occurred."
Following the incident, the driver was reported to the courts for dangerous driving.
However, police administered a roadside tests which he passed, indicating he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
