THE president of a fledgling Women’s Institute described its launch as a “phenomenal kick start” for the new group.

Ninety-one women attended the inaugural meeting of Dovestone WI at the their Royal George Hotel headquarters, Greenfield, when the group was officially declared open by Jackie Hobson, Lancashire WI Federation chairman.

And in a combined presentation, Jessica Moreland, the club’s president, outlined the history of the WI, how it works, what its achieved over the last 104 years and future resolutions.

Delph-born Jessica, a mother of two, said: “It was amazing to see so many women, who clearly all share the same ethos and want the same as our mission statement - solidarity, sisterhood and support.

“Some of the ideas emulating from the meeting were genius, brilliant and innovative and will see our WI very busy for very many months to come.

“I’d like to thank all the ladies who attended and our committee who made it happen with a special shout out to Susan Mills, one of our treasurers, who also did an awesome job registering umpteen new members.”

Dovestone WI's next meeting is Wednesday, May 15 at 7.30pm the Royal George when inspirational Ged King, is guest speaker.

Ged is founder of SkullFades Foundation and has taken to the streets of Manchester to help the homeless, disadvantaged and ex-service personnel.

Jessica explained: “By offering them not only haircuts and shaves, Ged also gives training and teaching barbering skills, in a compassionate, encouraging and inspiring environment.

“His aim, alongside his team of counsellors and coaches, is to give back the belief and sense of worth to these people, in a hope they can better themselves and give them the lift they so desperately need.”

SkullFades Foundation has also worked in refugee camps in Calais, helping and teaching the same principles.

Added Jessica: “Ged wants to expand this ethos across local communities, which sits very well alongside Dovestone WI and what we are hoping to do within the community.”

The DWI committee look forward to welcoming new members and guests to the May meeting. Check the Facebook page Facebook/DovestoneWI or its website:
