IT was a day to remember across the borough yesterday as groups of people celebrated St George’s Day.

Pictured are children from Daisy Hill Preschool, in Leigh Road, who spent the day dressed up as English warriors or princesses commemorate the country’s patron saint.

The youngsters joined other parties and celebrations paying homage to the famous soldier who is said to have travelled across the world and even slayed a dragon.

As well as being England’s patron, George is also the patron saint of Georgia, Portugal and Ethiopia, as well as cities such as Moscow, Freiburg and Beirut.

He also represents the scouts and his heroic exploits are said to be “typical of what a scout should be”.
