SADDLEWORTH District Girl Guides are urgently seeking volunteers to help keep their Rainbow, Brownies and Guides groups thriving across the area.

And in their bid to find the next generation of helpers and leaders with different time commitments, they have taken a stand at the Saddleworth Show at Well-i-Hole Farm, Greenfield, on Sunday, when local leaders will be available to outline the exciting opportunities.

Sue Rooke, the Saddleworth District girl guiding commissioner, said: “Our volunteers do amazing things and this year alone guilders have been white water rafting, training guiding leaders overseas and singing along with pop stars and 10,000 girls at Wembley Arena.

“Volunteering isn’t just about campfires and helping guides to get their next badge, although these are special moments that we all share.

“It’s about empowering girls and giving them new experiences. It’s being a role model and helping girls to reach their full potential. It’s sharing and developing your skills.”

Caroline Tamworth, who became leader at 42nd Oldham Kiln Green, Diggle Brownies four years ago, said: “Seeing the girls gain from the activities is so rewarding.

“I’ve made so many friends through being a volunteer and tried new things myself that I never would have if I hadn’t been involved in Girlguiding.

“I have no teaching experience and had never worked with children before. I wasn’t even a Brownie myself as a child. Everyone has something to offer as a volunteer.

“We really need some more volunteers to help keep our units thriving so we can continue to offer the girls an opportunity to grow in confidence, learn new skills and have fun in a safe environment.”

Prospective volunteers can find out more and register their interest on the Girl Guiding website www.girlguiding.org.uk .

All volunteers will be DBS checked as part of the joining process. Training is also available for first aid and safe guarding where required.
