MORE than 500 hundred people shared The Saddleworth Great Get Together, held in the gardens of the White Hart Inn, Lydgate on Sunday afternoon (June 23).

Inspired by Jo Cox, the event echoed her dream of bringing people together to show "we have more in common, than that which divides us".

Styled on a village fete of yesteryear, families picnicked and chatted while children challenged themselves on the climbing wall erected by Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

They had a go at 3D Dynamos’ penalty shoot out and tried mini tennis organised by Saddleworth Tennis Club.

The Saddleworth WI were out in force with their Great Bake Off and there were lots of other stalls and activities.

Visitors were a entertained by the Saddleworth Morris Men, Anthony Kinsey and his band and the Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers. One highlight of the afternoon was the choir from St Anne’s C of E Primary School, Lydgate.

The event was created by Jennifer Greenwood Chair of Love Lydgate, Charles Brierley of the White Hart and Henry Burbidge from Saddleworth Round Table.

Henry said ‘This is the third year we have held this event and it just gets bigger and better. Everyone gave their time so generously — it truly was a Great Get Together.

“Although it isn’t about making money we did raise £1,600 which is to be divided between the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and Action Against Hunger.

“In addition other community groups raised a further £1,100 for their own charitable causes.”
