FIREFIGHTERS from Oldham were called to Dovestone reservoir last night (Wednesday, June 26) after a family group of about 10 people lit a fire on the edge of the lake, contravening warning signs put up in the wake of last year's devastating moors blazes.

They were called to the scene at about 7.20pm and quickly extinguished the fire.

Oldham fire station's red watch manager Phil Courtnell said the group were co-operative but did not seem aware of the warning signs or strict ban on barbecues and open fires in the area.

"The group said one of them had fallen in the water and they had lit the fire to warm them up.

"However, I would emphasise that visitors to this area need to understand that fires are prohibited there for very good reasons, and this should adhered to regardless of the fact there has been a lot of rain already this summer. There have already been some moorland fires again this year. We cannot afford to be complacent.
