OLDHAM East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams has backed the first "relationships and sex education day" today, Thursday, June 27.

RSE Day, coordinated by the Sex Education Forum and Nottingham City Council, celebrates the work that goes on in schools and communities, helping children and young people learn about healthy relationships.

Ms Abrahams said: “It’s so important our children receive good quality relationships and sex education in schools.

“With the growth of intolerance and even hatred of difference, the importance of teaching children and young people to treat each other with kindness, understanding and respect can’t be underestimated.

“I hope that RSE Day encourages schools and the wider community to get involved and challenges everyone to consider their role in promoting healthy relationships, whether as a parent or carer, an educator, a faith leader, a councillor, a health practitioner, a friend or family member.”

Lucy Emmerson, director of the Sex Education Forum, said: “Research shows that excellent RSE supports the wellbeing of children and young people and is most effective when it happens in school and at home.

"Today is an opportunity for everyone to send a clear message of support to the teachers, school staff, families and communities leading the way in making RSE lessons safe, enjoyable and relevant for children and young people.”
